Havergate Hare workshops.
Join Tom for an in-the-field workshop photographing the iconic Brown hare. Having been working with hares for more than a decade, Tom has extensive experience working with these animals all over the country.
Working alongside the RSPB, Tom has been visiting Havergate Island for a number of years now and has been granted the opportunity to offer exclusive one day photography workshops.
Come and experience this wonderful remote island nature reserve, with professional coaching from Tom to help you develop your shooting and fieldcraft techniques, and get the best from your photography.
Tours are run in March of each year, in order to coincide with the highest likelihood of activity throughout the day. Places are limited to 6 people per day to reduce the impact on the wildlife and ensure Tom has ample time to work with each attendee on an individual and personal basis to ensure they get the attention they need.
Tom’s guiding is all about getting YOU in the right position so you’ll rarely see him pick up his camera. Instead he’ll be mostly found with his binoculars welded to his glasses in order to help pick out subjects and get everyone into the best possible positions for images. Of course Tom will have his cameras on hand to help guide you in shooting techniques, and offer his insights to help you get the most from your photography whilst on location.
Workshops start at 7 am unless otherwise stated, meeting at Orford Quay, Suffolk. Timings are to get us on the island for the earliest time possible, within the operational hours of the RSPB boat, with workshops finishing at 2 pm back at the quay. The workshops are subject to weather conditions and can be cancelled at short notice if the wind is prohibitive for landing on the island.
Due to the remote nature of the island, a decent level of fitness is required. You’ll need to get on and off a small boat onto sometimes slippery surfaces. The island is a mixture of shingle and grass, and we will likely spend a lot of time kneeling, crawling and sitting down on the ground to get the best out of the photographic opportunities. If you have any concerns before booking, don’t hesitate to get in touch to talk through any additional requirements!
Gear: A telephoto lens of 300 mm or above is advised to make the most of the day. Having your longest lens alongside a medium and wide option will allow for more creative interpretations. Lenses such as the 100-400/ 180-600 mm are great choices for flexibility, with longer prime lenses also being fantastic for more frame-filling shots.
Be sure to check out my hare portfolio with images from RSPB Havergate alongside my work from around the country.
Workshop priced at £199.00 per person per day.
“Tom Mason is a fantastic teacher—attentive, friendly, and incredibly generous with his knowledge. I booked three days on Havergate where he taught invaluable field skills and was always on hand for technical advice. The workshops exceeded all my expectations, and I enjoyed every minute. Highly recommended!”

“Hi Tom
I Just wanted to say thanks so much again for hosting such a great workshop! I had such a fabulous time!”
“Thank you for today. Just had a 1st chance to look through my images, just on the back of the camera, and I am absolutely 💯 delighted with them. Barely a dud amongst them ! You are an excellent workshop leader”
“Just a message to say how much I enjoyed photographing the hares on Havergate with you last week. I thought it was very well organised and that you were spot on with everything about the day. Your obvious knowledge and insights into the hares’ behaviour shone through as well as the ability to spot them amongst the gorse!”
