Brown Bear

Spirit of the forest.

The Brown bear is the largest land predator on the European continent, and one that also has a magical quality. I have always been fascinated with bears, and having wanted to see them for as long as I can remember, of course the moment I was able to - I wanted to photograph them.

I have been on multiple trips to Finland over past years to work with the bears, during each opportunity working to create a portfolio of images that represents their personality, presence and spirit in the forest environment.

I have worked with a variety of techniques to develop these images, spending a great deal of time thinking up interesting and novel ways of showcasing bears. Two of my favourites are the vertical panorama, capturing the young, high up in a tree in response to an adult male passing by, and the double exposure, exploring the relationship between bear and forest to create a magical feel to the images. I pioneered both techniques to capture a unique view of a well-photographed subject.
