Ice Kingdom

Svalbard is an iconic location for anyone obsessed with wildlife. The raw nature of the environment crafted by ice, glaciers carving a landscape; rugged and unforgiving. In this region the ice bear is king, taking refuge on this archipelago in the summer, before moving back out onto the sea ice to hunt. The dramatic cliffs give respite for breeding seabirds, and a bounty of food for scavengers and predators alike. The weather is unpredictable and harsh, the landscape untamed by man.

Whilst in Svalbard I wanted to capture the feeling of the region, exploring the isolation and the constant evolving nature of the ice. The summer landscape of Svalbard afforded me the unique perspective of a time when Polar bears are restricted in their movements, often away from sea ice. Moments capturing lone bears on stony beaches were contrasted with those at packed seabird cliffs, alive with activity. I took the time to explore relationships between arctic species, such as the Arctic fox scavenging below the birds on these impending faces.

In 2024 I travelled to Svalbard alongside the team from Oceanwide.

Commissioned to work on a YouTube series, I was photographing from the ice-strengthened ship Plancius, shooting images of the iconic scenes and wildlife of the region whilst making a circumnavigation of Spitsbergen.
